A month-by-month guide to better weather, better prices, and the right place to stay

Here's a question I get all the time: “When's the best time to go?” The honest answer is, it depends where you're headed. If you really could go anytime, there's almost always a sweet spot: a window when the weather cooperates, the crowds thin out, and the prices come back down to earth.
I put together this month-by-month guide as a starting point. It's not a rulebook, it's a head start. If one of these is pulling you, let's talk and I'll build out the details: flights, the right room category, the restaurant you shouldn't miss. That's what I'm here for.

January: Costa Rica
Guanacaste, the Pacific coast
January sits right in the middle of Costa Rica's dry season, so you get reliably sunny days, warm water, and a landscape that's still green from the fall rains. It's a great fit for a family that wants a beach base. You can either relax and chill at the resort, or include some adventure: zip lines, volcano hikes, horseback rides through the hills. Because the dry season runs through April, January rates are noticeably softer than the February through March rush.
Stay: Planet Hollywood Costa Rica for a fun, energetic all-inclusive with a great beach location in Guanacaste. Riu Palace Costa Rica is another solid all-inclusive option with a more classic resort feel, also right on the water.

February: Venice
Italy, before the crowds arrive
Venice in February belongs to the locals again. The canals are quieter, the light is soft and a little moody, and if your timing lines up with Carnevale, you'll catch the city at its most theatrical, masks, costumes, and all. Hotel rates drop well below summer pricing, and you can actually get a table at the restaurants that are impossible to book in June.
Stay: Hotel Bella Venezia, a well-run, well-located boutique property with a loyal following and a genuinely warm feel. Palazzo Abadessa is a beautiful 16th-century palazzo in the Cannaregio neighborhood, a quieter, more residential part of the city that most tourists miss entirely.
March: the Danube
Budapest, Vienna, and the Wachau Valley
River cruise season opens gently in March. The Danube's vineyard towns are just waking up, daffodils are out along the Wachau Valley, and ships haven't hit peak pricing yet. It's an easy way to see Budapest, Vienna, and the small towns between them without the July heat or the August crowds, and pairing a pre-cruise city stay with the sailing itself makes for a full, well-paced trip.
Stay: Prestige Hotel Budapest, a boutique property in the heart of the city with a rooftop terrace and views over the Parliament building. Novotel Budapest Danube is a solid, reliable alternative right on the river and an easy walk to the cruise terminal.

April: Jackson Hole
Wyoming, in the quiet season
April is Jackson Hole's secret. Ski season has wound down, summer crowds haven't arrived, and the valley turns soft and golden as snow melts off the lower trails. It's a wonderful time for a wellness-minded trip: spa days, quiet hikes, and views of the Tetons without another car in the parking lot.
Stay: The Wort Hotel, a Jackson institution right on Town Square with a loyal regular following. Rustic Inn Creekside Resort and Spa is a comfortable, reliable alternative along Flat Creek.
May: Kauai
Hawaii's Garden Isle
May threads the needle in Kauai: the winter swells have calmed down, the weather is warm and dry, and you're in ahead of summer's higher prices and busier beaches. It's an island built for slowing down, waterfalls, hiking the Na Pali coast, and resorts that don't try too hard.
Stay: Sheraton Kauai Resort on Poipu Beach, a dependable, well-reviewed property right on the sand, or Hanalei Bay Resort on the North Shore for a quieter, condo-style stay with the same dramatic views.

June: Sorrento
Gateway to the Amalfi Coast, Italy
Sorrento is the smarter base for exploring the Amalfi Coast. It sits at the top of the peninsula with easy ferry access to Positano, Capri, and the rest of the coast, so you get all the scenery without being stuck in one cliff-side town. June is warm, the lemon groves are fragrant, and you're just ahead of the July and August crowds. It's an especially good pick for a honeymoon or anniversary trip that wants flexibility and a little more room to breathe.
Stay: Grand Hotel Capodimonte, a classic Sorrento property with sweeping Bay of Naples views and a pool cut into the cliffs. MichelAngelo Hotel Sorrento is a well-run, centrally located option a short walk from the ferry port.
July: Puerto Vallarta
Mexico's Pacific coast
Yes, it's the rainy season, and that's exactly the appeal. Showers tend to arrive in a quick afternoon burst and clear out fast, leaving mornings and evenings warm, lush, and noticeably less crowded than the winter high season. Rates drop accordingly, which makes July a good call for a family trip or a multigenerational group that wants more room for the same budget.
Stay: Secrets Bahia Mita Surf and Spa Resort in Punta Mita, an adults-only all-inclusive with an oceanfront setting and a quieter, more refined feel. Melia Puerto Vallarta is a solid all-inclusive option closer to the hotel zone, good for families wanting a lively, well-organized resort.

August: the Nordic countries
Norway's fjords and Lofoten Islands
August is peak season for the midnight sun fading into long golden evenings across Norway's fjord country. The Lofoten Islands in particular are having a moment: dramatic peaks rising straight out of the sea, fishing villages painted in deep red, and hiking trails that stay light well past dinner. It's an adventure-minded trip that still leaves plenty of room for slow, scenic days.
Stay: Thon Hotel Lofoten, a dependable, well-located four-star right on the harbor in Svolvaer, an easy base for exploring the islands. For something with more local character, Svinoya Rorbuer offers traditional Norwegian fishermen's cabins on their own small island in Svolvaer harbor, with one of the best restaurants in Lofoten on site.
September: Greece
Athens and Crete
September might be the best-kept secret on this whole list. The Aegean is still warm enough to swim, the August heat has broken, and Greek families have gone back to school, which means quieter beaches and easier restaurant reservations. Start in Athens for a few days of history and great food, then fly or ferry down to Crete for beaches, villages, and the kind of slow pace that makes you forget you have a return flight. It's an excellent month for a multigenerational trip that wants both culture and coast.
Stay: In Athens, the Plaka Hotel is within walking distance of the Acropolis and the Hellenic Parliament. In Crete, Azade Chania, located in Old Town Chania, is a perfect blend of harbor views and 16th-century charm.

October: Aruba
The Caribbean's safest bet
Aruba sits outside the hurricane belt, so October, peak hurricane season everywhere else in the Caribbean, is simply a normal, sunny week here. Add in the fact that most of the Caribbean is offering shoulder season pricing right now, and Aruba becomes one of the best value weeks of the year for a reliable beach escape.
Stay: Amsterdam Manor Beach Resort on Eagle Beach is a reputable Dutch colonial-style property with spacious studios and suites and a loyal following of repeat guests.

November: Provence
Aix-en-Provence and the Luberon, France
November trades lavender fields for golden vineyards and the soft, low light that photographers chase all over the south of France. The crowds are gone, restaurant tables are easy to get, and the region's wine harvest celebrations are still going strong in the early part of the month. It's a quieter, more grown-up version of the Provence everyone pictures in July.
Stay: Aquabella Hôtel and Spa, a well-regarded four-star in the heart of Aix-en-Provence with a garden, spa, and easy walk to the old town. Boutique Hotel Cézanne is a smaller, well-reviewed alternative on a quiet street near Cours Mirabeau.
December: Riviera Maya
Mexico's Caribbean coast
December opens the dry season along the Riviera Maya, so you get blue skies, calm water, and warm temperatures right as winter sets in back home. Book early in the month, before the holiday weeks push rates up, and you'll find some of the best value of the entire dry season. It's a strong choice for a multigenerational holiday trip or a honeymoon that wants both jungle and beach.
Stay: Barcelo Maya Palace Resort, a well-run all-inclusive with a large beachfront spread and good facilities for families and groups. Iberostar Selection Paraiso Lindo is another strong option with a quieter, more intimate feel while still offering the full all-inclusive experience.
