10 things to skip if you want a smoother, more relaxing stay (and better service too)

All-inclusive resorts are like tiny paradises where everything you need is just a stroll or a room service button away. But even in paradise, there's an unspoken code of conduct—the kind that separates the thoughtful travelers from the ones other guests silently side-eye at the pool.

Here are ten simple things to avoid so you can enjoy your resort getaway without a hitch (and maybe even score a little VIP treatment along the way).

1. Wearing pool gear to dinner

Resort restaurants often have a dress code—even the casual ones. Swimsuits, tank tops, and sandy flip-flops are best left by the pool. A simple sundress or linen button-down goes a long way toward a more elevated (and comfortable!) dining experience.

Pro tip: Pack one “resort casual” outfit for each night just to make evenings easy.

2. Skipping the tip

Yes, many all-inclusives include gratuities. But tipping a few dollars here and there (think: your favorite bartender, the bellhop who hustled up stairs, or the housekeeper who left towel art) isn’t just kind—it can also unlock better service throughout your stay.

3. Claiming loungers before sunrise

Tossing your towel on six pool chairs and disappearing until noon? That’s peak “chair hog” behavior. Most resorts have unofficial rules (and even official ones) about this. Don’t be that person. If you’re heading to breakfast, sure—save your spot. But if you're hitting the spa or off on an excursion? Let someone else enjoy the shade.

4. Going overboard night one

Unlimited everything can feel like a dare. But nobody wants to spend day two nursing a poolside headache or regretting that third plate of shrimp tacos. You’ll have time to try it all—pace yourself and let indulgence meet intention.

5. Ignoring the resort map

Resorts can sprawl like tiny cities, and wandering around aimlessly in the tropical heat isn’t exactly relaxing. Take ten minutes when you arrive to explore the layout—or better yet, attend the orientation (yes, really). Knowing where the hidden hammocks, quiet pools, or oceanfront yoga spots are? Game changer.

6. Assuming everything is included

That dreamy spa menu, private cabana, or dinner at the chef’s table? Some extras cost extra. Before you say yes to everything, check what’s included with your package (or better yet—ask your travel advisor to flag any surprise fees ahead of time).

7. Getting sunburned on day one

Sunburn doesn’t just sting—it can sideline your whole vacation. Apply sunscreen before you leave your room, reapply often (especially after swimming), and give yourself shady breaks. Wide-brimmed hats are your friend. You’ll enjoy your trip way more if you’re not spending it lobster red and aloe-slathered.

8. Forgetting you’re in a real place

Even if you never leave the resort, remember: you’re visiting a country with its own culture, people, and traditions. A little respect goes a long way—whether that means learning a local greeting, being kind to staff, or understanding that “island time” is part of the charm, not a flaw.

9. Leading with complaints

The Wi-Fi may be slow. The room might not be ready at 3:01. But taking a deep breath and approaching staff with kindness nearly always gets better results than jumping to frustration. You’re here to unwind—let grace be your travel superpower.

10. Taking over the vibe

Resorts are shared spaces. A Bluetooth speaker at the pool, speakerphone calls from the lounger, or yelling to your cousin across the lazy river? It’s a no. Enjoy the fun, just not at full volume.
