Ireland itinerary: 9-day self-drive trip with castles, cliffs, and hidden gems

Bonnie and Bryant came to me wanting Ireland and Scotland… and then decided, after seeing what that rushed trip would look like, “Let’s actually enjoy one country instead of speed-running two.” Excellent choice.

What I built instead:

A 9-night Ireland itinerary that blends the must-see highlights (Cliffs of Moher, Ring of Kerry, Dublin) with the kinds of experiences that make a trip feel personal—food tours, small towns, and even a castle stay.

If you’re looking for a self-drive Ireland itinerary that balances iconic sights with meaningful moments, this is it.

Dublin Castle

Day 1: Dublin arrival (where your Ireland itinerary begins)

Land in Dublin, pick up a small SUV (yes, you’ll be driving on the left-hand side of the road. By day two, you’ll feel oddly proud of yourself), and check into The Davenport in Georgian Dublin.

It’s a perfect soft landing: classic Irish charm, comfortable rooms, and a location that makes it easy to step out and start exploring. Take a short walk, grab dinner nearby, and ease into the rhythm of the trip.

Kilkenny Castle

Day 2: Dublin food tour, Wicklow Mountains, Kilkenney, and Waterford

Start your morning with a Dublin food tour, sampling local specialties while learning the story behind Irish cuisine—from traditional comfort food to the modern foodie scene.

Then your Ireland road trip officially begins. Drive through the Wicklow Mountains (rolling green hills and cinematic views), continue to Kilkenny (medieval streets, a 12th-century castle, and plenty of charm), and end in Waterford.

Overnight at Faithlegg House, an 18th-century estate with a spa, golf course, and peaceful countryside setting. It’s your first “this trip was a very good idea” moment.

Killarney

Day 3: Blarney Castle to Killarney

Drive toward Killarney with a stop at Blarney Castle, one of Ireland’s most famous landmarks. Wander the estate grounds, explore the village, and, if you’re feeling brave, climb up to kiss the stone.

Arrive in Killarney and check into the Arbutus Hotel, a historic property right in the town center. You’re steps from pubs, shops, and live music--and mornings that start with a traditional Irish breakfast (brown bread and scones included, of course).

Day 4: Ring of Kerry scenic drive

Today is one of the highlights of any Ireland itinerary: the Ring of Kerry.

Expect dramatic coastal views, colorful villages, and stops that feel like postcards come to life. With a guide sharing stories, legends, and local insights, it becomes more than just a scenic drive; it’s a deeper look into Ireland’s culture and history.

Cliffs of Moher

Day 5: Cliffs of Moher to Galway

Head north, stopping at the Cliffs of Moher, one of the most iconic natural sights in Ireland. Towering cliffs, crashing Atlantic waves, and wide-open views—it’s every bit as impressive as you’ve heard.

Continue on to Galway (about a 3-hour drive total). Stay at The Hardiman Hotel on Eyre Square, a blend of Victorian elegance and modern comfort, perfectly located for exploring the city on foot.

Day 6: Explore Galway and County Galway

This is your flexible day to explore Galway and the surrounding region.

Options include driving or biking the Sky Road, hiking Diamond Hill, or visiting Kylemore Abbey (which looks like it belongs in a storybook). Or simply wander Galway’s lively streets, enjoy local music, and let the day unfold naturally.

Ashford Castle

Day 7: Ashford Castle experience

A short drive brings you to Ashford Castle, a Forbes 5-star property and one of the most unique stays in Ireland.

Here, you can try falconry, horseback riding, or archery—or just enjoy the grounds and the atmosphere of a true Irish castle. Afternoon tea is included, offering a relaxed and elegant way to take it all in.

Athlone

Day 8: Athlone stopover

Drive to Athlone (about 1.5 hours) and settle into the Sheraton Athlone.

Spend your time exploring Athlone Castle, visiting St. Peter & Paul’s Church, or, for something unexpected, heading to Baysports—home to Ireland’s largest floating waterpark. It’s a fun mix of history and lighthearted adventure.

Irish Pub

Day 9: Return to Dublin

An easy drive brings you back to Dublin for your final night at The Mont.

Take advantage of your central location for last-minute shopping, one more memorable meal, or a final pub visit. It’s the perfect way to wrap up your Ireland self-drive itinerary.

Day 10: Depart Ireland

Return your rental car and head home, already thinking about when you can come back.

Why this Ireland itinerary works

This 9-day Ireland itinerary hits the must-see highlights: Dublin, Ring of Kerry, Cliffs of Moher, and a castle stay, while also giving you time to slow down and connect with the destination.

I think it's wonderfully paced, rich in experiences, and designed to help you feel Ireland, not just check it off a list.

If you’re dreaming about your own Ireland road trip or custom itinerary, I’ll help you design something that fits your people, your pace, and the kind of memories you actually want to bring home.
