Rome, Sorrento, Matera, and Puglia beaches: a beautiful adventure

There’s “We went to Italy.”
And then there’s, “We did Italy… and experienced a cave town, secret sea caves, and the perfect beaches.”
This itinerary blends the icons you’ve dreamed about with places most travelers miss. It is classic. It is coastal. It is just a little bit show-offy in the best way.
Some of my clients came to me wanting just a couple of days in Rome, the Colosseum included. They wanted time along the Amalfi Coast. They definitely wanted to experience the “cave town.” And they wanted beach time at the end. So I put together an itinerary.
If you are searching for a classic Italy itinerary that includes Rome, the Amalfi Coast, Matera, and Puglia beaches, this is exactly that.

Days 1–3: Rome: Because yes, you have to see the Colosseum
You land in Rome and are met by a private driver. No dragging suitcases across cobblestones while wondering why you packed three pairs of “just in case” shoes.
Your boutique hotel near the Trevi Fountain is perfectly placed for wandering. You can practically hear the fountain calling your name.
Highlights
Small-group Colosseum and Ancient Rome tour
Palatine Hill views over the Forum
Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps at golden hour
Walking into the Colosseum is one of those pinch-me moments. You will absolutely imagine gladiators. You will absolutely take too many photos. It is fine. Everyone does.

Pro tip
Visit Trevi late at night. Fewer crowds. More magic. Much better photos where it looks like you have Rome to yourself.

Days 4–6: Sorrento: Lemons, sea air, and a little wow
From Rome, you travel by train to Naples and then transfer to Sorrento . The pace softens. The air smells like citrus and sunshine.
Your hotel sits near the water, and La Marinella Beach is just steps away . If you love beaches, this is where you truly relax.
Day 5: Pompeii
A guided half-day tour through Pompeii . Walking those ancient streets is humbling and fascinating. It also makes you very grateful for modern plumbing.

Day 6: Capri and the Blue Grotto
A small-group boat day around Capri, including the famous Blue Grotto and hidden caves .
You will:
Sail past dramatic cliffs
Swim in impossibly blue water
Wonder if you should just move here
Pro tip
Bring a light scarf. It works for breezy boat rides, church visits, and pretending you are in a movie scene overlooking the sea.
Would you spend more time exploring Capri… or more time floating in the water?

Day 7: Matera: The plot twist
Just when you think you have Italy figured out, you pivot inland.
A private driver takes you about 3.5 hours to Matera. Suddenly you are in a cave city carved into stone cliffs.
Yes: a cave city.
You stay right in the Sassi district, just steps from the cathedral. The golden light at sunset makes the entire town glow. It feels ancient and sacred, slightly otherworldly.
Why include Matera in an Italy itinerary?
It offers a completely different landscape from Rome and the Amalfi Coast
It feels authentic and less crowded than major tourist hubs
It adds depth and contrast to a classic Italy trip
This is the “Wait… where are we?” moment in the best possible way.
Pro tip
Wake early and wander before breakfast. The quiet is unforgettable. And the photos are stunning.

Days 8–10: Puglia: Beach days done right
From Matera, you head to Monopoli on the Adriatic coast for four nights .
If you are searching for the best beaches in Puglia, this region is known for sandy coves, turquoise water, and relaxed coastal charm.
Your seaside resort offers easy access to sandy coves and beautiful water. Morning swims. Lazy afternoons under an umbrella. That delicious “we have nowhere urgent to be” feeling.
Day 9: Storybook towns
A private tour of:
Alberobello, with its whimsical trulli houses
Cisternino’s flower-lined alleys
Ostuni, the glowing White City
Side note: Alberobello feels like a fairy tale. You may half-expect a hobbit to open one of the tiny round doors.

Day 10: Sea caves of Polignano
A small-group gozzo boat tour exploring dramatic coastal caves, with stops to swim in crystalline water.
Seeing the cliffs from the sea gives you an entirely different perspective. Dramatic.
Cinematic. Absolutely worth it.
Pro tip
Rent bikes one morning and explore nearby beaches at your own pace. Wind in your hair. Salt on your skin. Zero pressure and lots of fun.
Days 11–12: Ending with ease
You fly from Bari back to Rome for a final overnight near the airport. There’s no last-minute rushing. No stressful connections. Just a smooth transition home.
Because the only thing you should be carrying at that point is good memories and maybe expanded appreciation for Italian pastries.
Why this itinerary is so great
It is not just “Italy in 10 days.”
It includes Rome and the Colosseum, because some experiences are essential.
It includes Sorrento and Capri, because coastal Italy is part of the dream.
But it also includes Matera. Intentional beach time in Puglia. And pacing that allows you to enjoy each place instead of simply checking it off.
That is the difference between a standard itinerary and one crafted around what you love.
If this were your Italy, would you lean more into history, hidden towns, or long beach days?
