Adventure is out there! The top 10 adventure destinations in the world

Part 1 of adventure destinations

I hope you’ve been having an adventurous summer! Mine’s been a little adventurous: we moved, which I count as a HUGE adventure, and I’ve had a few smaller adventures with boating and camping along the way. I actually feel like I could use a little more adventure right now!

Adventures are super fun. And part of dreaming about and planning vacations is thinking about the adventures you could go on while you’re there: after all, adventure is just figuring out ways to explore your surroundings!

Adventures are a perfect way to connect with your people and your surroundings.

I’ve got 20 places which are perfect for adventure travel. Today I’m sharing the first half, my top 10:

1: Antarctica

Traveling to Antarctica is the pinnacle of exploration, from crossing the world's most treacherous sea to seeing pristine ecosystems. If you're feeling particularly adventurous, trekking across glaciers or the polar plunge is considered a right of passage.

2: Austria

If you love winter sports, traveling to Austria won't disappoint. There are tons of adventure opportunities, including exploring the rolling hills on a fat bike or Segway, snowshoeing, and tobogganing down mountainsides. You can also climb a frozen wall!

3: Belize

There are no shortages of adventurous opportunities in Belize with its array of wildlife, stunning coastlines, thick jungle, and world-famous reef. Belize's Barrier Reef is the second-largest in the world. Your trip can also include climbing through caves or exploring Mayan ruins.

4: Canada

Canada is our world's second-largest country, which means endless adventure opportunities. You can walk with polar bears, watch grizzly bears, and canoe in isolated lakes to watch moose. Not to mention, because Canada's coastline is the longest in the world, there's a plethora of coastal adventure!

5: Chile

Nestled snug between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains, Chile's Patagonia Park gives explorers endless opportunities when checking out Torres del Paine National Park. Check out the Atacama Desert, where you'll feel like you've landed on the moon while exploring geysers and salt flats.

6: Costa Rica

Travelers love heading to Costa Rica for its gorgeous mix of animals, ecosystems, and ways for adventure-lovers to enjoy this country. From surfing schools to relaxing in hot springs, there's something for everyone. If you prefer staying on land, you can explore 28 national parks, go on canopy walks, and go ziplining.

7: Galapagos Islands

With its location 600 miles from Ecuador, animal lovers and outdoor adventurers feel like the Galapagos Islands are heaven on earth. You can explore Devil's Crown, an extinct volcanic cone near Floreana Island. Watch sea lions sunbathe on Gardner Bay's beach or check out the tortoises in Santa Cruz, and more!

8: Greenland

Greenland's outdoor activities, untouched landscapes, and indigenous culture tick off boxes for many adventure travelers. From hiking past herds of reindeer on the Arctic Circle Trail to kayaking among the Southern Fjord's icebergs, there's no shortage of adventurous activities in this country!

9: Guatemala

There are plenty of adventure opportunities in Guatemala. For example, you can take a one-hour hike up Volcano Pacaya or go overnight camping near Acatenango's summit. With the country featuring 30 volcanoes, endless wildlife watching and kayaking, adventure travelers won't have trouble finding fun things to do!

10: Iceland

While mainstream travelers flock to the country's most famous sites along the Golden Circle, there are plenty of other opportunities for adventurers to dig in their heels.
