6 best all-inclusive resorts for teens in Cancun and the Riviera Maya

Waterslides, adventure parks, teen hangouts, and enough food to keep everyone happy. Here's how to find the right Mexico resort for your family.

Remember when your kids were happy with a splash pad, a swimming pool, and unlimited ice cream?

Now they're teenagers. They want a little freedom, good Wi-Fi, and food whenever they're hungry (which seems to be all the time). A kids' club won't cut it anymore.

You want them to have fun, but you'd also love a few hours by the pool without wondering where they are. And maybe some family time that doesn't involve everyone staring at a phone.

Hundreds of travel advisors who specialize in Mexico (including me!) recently voted on our favorite teen-friendly resorts in Cancun and the Riviera Maya. We know these properties, hear from families after their trips, and understand which resorts actually keep teenagers happy.

Here are six of my favorites from that list, each offering something a little different.

Xcaret Park
Xcaret Park

1. Hotel Xcaret México: For families who love adventure

Hotel Xcaret isn't your typical all-inclusive. It's set among lush tropical greenery, with rivers, natural coves, and suspension bridges winding through the property.

What really sets it apart is the All-Fun Inclusive program, which includes access and transportation to several of the Xcaret adventure parks. Your family can zipline through the jungle at Xplor, swim in underground rivers, snorkel at Xel-Há, explore cenotes, and enjoy Mexican cultural experiences. Even a ferry trip and scheduled catamaran excursion to Isla Mujeres are included.

Teenagers also have their own hangout, Dixtrito 1317, with activities and entertainment designed for their age group.

Why I'd recommend it: If your family wants to experience more of Mexico than the resort pool, this is a fantastic choice. The room rate is higher, but with so many excursions included, it can be a great value.

My advice? Don't schedule an adventure park every day. They're amazing, but exhausting. Leave some time to relax!

Waterpark at Hard Rock

2. Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya: For high-energy teens

If your teenagers love music, waterparks, and lots of activity, Hard Rock is worth a look.

The resort has a lively atmosphere, the Rockaway Bay waterpark with 23 slides, bowling, games, and entertainment. Beach swimming takes place in protected coves rather than along an open stretch of beach, something I'd point out if your family loves long beach walks.

Hard Rock has two sections: Hacienda for families and Heaven for adults. Parents staying on the family side can enjoy the adults-only restaurants and amenities while their teens have plenty to do at Hacienda.

Why I'd recommend it: It's a fun mix of family activities and grown-up options. Just know that this isn't a quiet resort. If you prefer peaceful afternoons with a book, I'd probably steer you elsewhere.

3. Moon Palace The Grand: For teens who want nonstop fun

The Grand is the upscale section of the huge Moon Palace complex, just south of Cancun.

There's a waterpark with slides, a lazy river, wave pool, surf simulator, arcade, bumper cars, mini golf, and a teen lounge. Your kids could spend the entire vacation at the resort and still find something new to do.

One important detail: Guests at The Grand can use the entire Moon Palace complex, but guests staying in other sections don't automatically have access to The Grand's amenities.

Why I'd recommend it: It's a great combination of upscale accommodations and activities for nearly every age. Just don't choose it primarily for the beach. If swimming in clear turquoise ocean water is important, I'd look at other resorts.

4. Barceló Maya Palace: For beach lovers who want plenty to do

Barceló Maya Palace is the upscale, all-suite family resort within the enormous Barceló Maya Grand Resort complex.

Palace guests can enjoy the facilities at four neighboring Barceló hotels, giving families a huge selection of pools, restaurants, sports, and entertainment.

For teenagers, there's a FlowRider surf simulator, Pirates Island waterpark, bowling, and adventure activities. The beautiful beachfront is another big reason families love this resort, especially for snorkeling and swimming.

Why I'd recommend it: You get a more upscale place to stay, a great beach, and the activities of a much larger resort complex.

Just remember that some of the most exciting activities, including bowling and the waterpark, cost extra. I'll help you sort out what's included before booking.

5. Dreams Playa Mujeres: For a more relaxed family vacation

Not every teenager needs a giant waterpark. Some are perfectly happy spending the morning at the beach, playing volleyball in the afternoon, and hanging out with other teens in the evening.

Dreams Playa Mujeres is a great fit for those families.

The resort has a beautiful beachfront setting, pools, restaurants, and a more relaxed atmosphere. Its Core Zone Teens Club, for ages 13–17, gives teenagers a chance to meet others their age.

A nice perk for parents: Guests 18 and older can enjoy the restaurants and amenities at the neighboring adults-only Secrets Playa Mujeres.

Why I'd recommend it: It's a good balance of family time, teen independence, and relaxation for parents.

One thing to know: The lazy river at Dreams is reserved for Preferred Club guests. If your family wants to use it, the room category matters.

6. AVA Resort Cancun: For families who want a more upscale experience

AVA is one of Cancun's newer all-inclusive resorts, with contemporary accommodations and ocean views from every room.

Its standout feature is AVA Bay, a large man-made saltwater lagoon with calm water for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Teenagers also have their own lounge with games, basketball, and ping pong.

Unlike some of the huge entertainment-focused resorts, AVA is a good fit for families who appreciate comfortable rooms, good food, and plenty of water activities without needing a packed schedule.

Why I'd recommend it: It's particularly great for families with older teens, or multigenerational groups who want a nicer resort experience with activities everyone can enjoy.

The property is large, so expect some walking.

A few things to know before booking

Check the teen club ages. Some clubs stop at 15, while others go through 17. If your teenager is excited about meeting other kids, make sure they're eligible.

Give everyone a little space. Connecting rooms or a two-bedroom suite can be worth the upgrade. Four people sharing one bathroom for a week can test even the happiest family.

Don't choose based on beach photos alone. Sargassum seaweed can affect beaches along this coast, especially during warmer months. A resort with great pools and activities gives you other options.

Let your teenager help plan. Whether it's snorkeling, visiting Maya ruins, or swimming in a cenote, let them choose at least one adventure. They're usually a lot more excited about something they helped pick.

Make the most of these family vacations

You only have so many years when your kids still want to travel with you.

As they get older, the trips change. You're not together every minute anymore. Your teenager heads off to play volleyball while you read by the pool.

Then you're back together at dinner, sunburned and laughing about the day, making plans for tomorrow. Those are the nights you'll remember long after the trip.
